ISLAMABAD – At the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Secretary Ministry of Human Rights Mr. Abdul Khalique Shaikh reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights globally.
Addressing the Council, he stressed that human rights must be upheld not only in times of stability but also amid conflict, uncertainty, and complex global challenges. As an elected member of the Council, Pakistan reiterated its constructive engagement with the UN human rights framework. The Secretary voiced serious concern over the deteriorating human rights situations in Afghanistan, Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and Palestine. He emphasized that religion, particularly Islam, must not be misused to justify the suppression of women’s rights, highlighting the plight of women and girls in Afghanistan.
Reaffirming the principle of self-determination, he stated that the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir continue to be denied their inalienable rights under the UN Charter and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. He also drew attention to the grave humanitarian crisis in Palestine, warning that continued violence and impunity risk further destabilizing the region and undermining prospects for lasting peace.
Expressing concern over rising religious intolerance and Islamophobia in political discourse, the Secretary urged the international community to strengthen collective efforts to combat hatred, discrimination, and inequality.
Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, multilateral cooperation, and the universal respect for human rights in line with the principles and purposes of the UN Charter.
