With global officials engaging artificial intelligence safety teams amid concerns about harmful outputs, an expert says brands using AI must treat safety governance as core risk management, not just policy compliance.
When Reuters reported that Canadian officials planned to meet with the OpenAI safety team after a school shooting was linked to AI‑generated content, it underscored a new reality: public scrutiny of AI systems is not limited to regulators. If AI can create narratives with real‑world harm, then every organisation that deploys AI is exposed to brand risk.

Documentation then follows: “Third, maintain audit trails of decisions, data inputs, interventions, and mitigations. This makes accountability concrete and defensible. When regulators inspect, or when issues hit the press, you need traceability: who saw what, when, and what action was taken?”
AI must also connect with the multiple aspects of compliance, says Yu: “Finally, safety governance must integrate with broader risk functions: legal, brand, and executive leadership. If your board and C‑suite don’t see AI safety as a risk function (like cybersecurity or compliance), you’ve already lost the battle.”
Yu concludes with: “Good governance entails safe, responsible, transparent use that builds trust and resilience.”
