Roche Chairman: U.S. Tariff Impact on Pharma and Diagnostics | 2026 – News and Statistics

According to a Reuters report, the chairman of Roche expects the company’s pharmaceutical imports to remain exempt from U.S. tariffs due to an existing agreement. The chairman stated that the diagnostics division, however, continues to face significant exposure to potential duties.

The agreement with the U.S. government, involving Roche and eight other pharmaceutical firms, was reached in December. The deal involved lowering medicine prices in exchange for a three-year removal of tariff threats on drug imports. The company’s leadership assumes this pact is binding for pharmaceuticals.

Roche’s diagnostics business exports a substantial portion of its tests and instruments to the United States from Switzerland and other European nations. This division reported sales close to 14 billion Swiss francs for the year 2025. The chairman noted that products manufactured in the United States also encounter import tariffs from China.

Due to retaliatory tariffs from China, the company faces a situation where it pays tariffs twice on some products as a net exporter from the U.S. The chairman characterized this outcome as absurd.

He anticipates that after an initial 150-day period concludes, the U.S. government will likely reimpose import tariffs on diagnostics under a different legal framework. Despite the challenges faced by the diagnostics unit, Roche has no intention of separating it from the broader company, according to the chairman’s comments.
