NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) – New Bern residents may encounter smoke as prescribed burns are set to begin in the Croatan National Forest this week.
The burns aim to reduce overgrown vegetation and help protect infrastructure, habitats, and natural resources from wildfires.
Depending on the weather, fire officials hope to continue this work over the next few weeks.
Warning signs will be in place near burning sites, with closures set for nearby roads. Those will reopen when officials deem the area safe.
Notifications for prescribed burning will be posted to the national forest’s Facebook page on the day of the fire.
