Switzerland Evacuates Embassy Staff from Iran Amid Regional Tensions

The Swiss Embassy staff in Iran, led by Ambassador Olivier Bangerter, were evacuated to Azerbaijan amid the escalation in the region.

According to reports, Ambassador Bangerter and six of his colleagues safely entered Azerbaijan via the Astara border crossing. The Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran provided assistance in coordinating and ensuring the safety of the evacuation from the country.

«Our minister (the Swiss foreign minister – ed.) decided to temporarily close the embassy in Iran, so we decided to leave the country. We chose Azerbaijan (for evacuation – ed.), because we have excellent relations with the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran»

It was also reported that one Canadian citizen and two Chinese citizens were evacuated.

«He thanked the Azerbaijani side for facilitating the evacuation and for the “warm welcome,” and added that the staff of his diplomatic mission would spend two nights in Baku, and then head to Switzerland.»

As was reported earlier, on March 6 Azerbaijan decided to evacuate its embassy in Tehran and the Consulate General in Tabriz amid rising tensions in the region.
