Several individuals have tragically lost their lives, with numerous others injured, following a man allegedly setting himself ablaze inside a bus.

A postal bus ignited in Kerzers, Fribourg, in an incident currently under investigation by local authorities. The fire broke out just prior to the bus reaching its final stop on Murtenstrasse.

Local law enforcement confirmed the death of six people and injuries to five others, including one brave individual who attempted to assist. The identities of those who perished have yet to be disclosed.

Eyewitness accounts suggested to journalists that the blaze may have been intentionally started by a man who set himself alight within the vehicle.

A substantial emergency response was mobilised, but by the time firefighters reached the scene, the bus had been reduced to a burnt-out shell. Videos and photos circulated by onlookers depict flames soaring several metres high, smoke columns visible for miles, and feathers from ruined down jackets scattering in the wind.

Officials stated that the precise circumstances surrounding the fire remain uncertain, and police are exploring the potential of arson. When questioned about any possible links to terrorism, a police spokesperson responded: “We cannot comment on that at this stage of the investigation.”

“The intervention will certainly continue throughout the night,” a spokeswoman for Freiburg police confirmed.

The event has left the local community reeling, with bystanders recounting the scene as deeply distressing. Emergency services are maintaining their presence at the location as the inquiry progresses.
