ETH is the best university in the world for Earth and Marine Sciences, Geology and Geophysics. This is now the seventh year in a row that these subjects achieved this position in the QS World University Rankings by Subject compiled by the British analysis firm Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).

Also also highlighted by a statement from ETH, it comes fourth in three other disciplines: Architecture and Built Environment, Civil and Structural Engineering as well as Environmental Sciences. The latter had previously been ranked seventh and eighth in recent years. Mechanical Engineering is now placed sixth and Chemical Engineering seventh. Electrical Engineering and Agriculture and Forestry both rank eighth. This is followed by three ninth-place finishes for Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy and Statistics. Finally, QS ranks ETH’s Computer Science, Materials Sciences and Mathematics disciplines as the tenth-best in the world.

The field of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence had been ranked eighth last year and is now in eleventh place. Law has improved significantly, rising from between 101 and 150 in previous years to 89th place. The discipline of Anatomy and Physiology also rose significantly in the rankings, from a position between 51 and 100 to 39th place.

This year’s rankings are the biggest yet, with over 1,900 institutions included in this edition. Of these, 300 appear for the first time. Southern Asia has the highest percentage of improved universities since last year, while East Asia provides the most new entrants. The approximately 550 best degree programs in the world are grouped into five subject areas: arts and humanities, engineering and technology, life sciences and medicine, social sciences and management, and natural sciences.
