Geneva’s budget deadlock is dragging on.
The State Council of Geneva has presented a new draft budget showing a deficit of nearly CHF 600m, but admits it’s unlikely to pass.
Finance minister Nathalie Fontanet says the exercise is “pointless,” blaming a political standoff over CHF 300m in proposed savings.
Rising costs – driven by demographics, healthcare, and federal obligations – are outpacing weak revenue growth, while tax income has been revised down.
With parties divided, approval looks unlikely, and temporary budgeting could continue through the year.
A broader savings plan is expected by June.
