A 25-year-old man died Thursday morning after being hit by an eastbound Metra train in Geneva, according to the Geneva Police Department.
At around 6 a.m., Geneva police officers and firefighters were dispatched to assist the Metra Police Department for a report of a train accident involving a pedestrian, a news release from the Geneva Police Department said.
Upon arrival, Geneva officers met with the train conductor and found the man who had been hit near the Union Pacific-West railway tracks west of the Western Avenue grade crossing, the department said, west of the Geneva Metra station. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man was struck by the train on the northernmost track, the police department said, and was reportedly alone at the time. Preliminary findings indicate no foul play is suspected. The stopped Metra train did not block the Western Avenue crossing, officials said.
Tracks reopened after about 90 minutes following disruptions to the train line, a Metra spokesperson confirmed.
The incident remains under investigation by the Metra Police Department and Kane County Coroner’s Office, the Geneva Police Department indicated. The man’s family is still being notified, and the Metra Police Department and Coroner’s Office are not releasing his name at this time.
