BLT core network automation and NOVA Pro rollout
BLT Baselland Transport AG has commissioned Stadler. It will install the communication-based train control system NOVA Pro. The system will cover the core network in the Basel metropolitan area. NOVA Pro has already demonstrated semi-automated GoA2 operations on the Waldenburg railway line.
On BLT’s core network, Stadler NOVA Pro will replace the existing system. It will enable speed regulation, level-crossing control and precise stops at stations. After departure approval by the driver, all journeys are then carried out fully automatically.
Basel urban rail automation on Line 11
BLT has announced an intention to deploy the train control system. It will cover the entire core network in the Basel metropolitan area. It will bring automation and digitalisation into complex urban rail operations. Initial test operations on Line 11 are scheduled to begin as early as 2027. The rollout will then move across the entire BLT core network in phases.

Tango and TINA trams with 4G and 5G train control communication
Later this year, trams will be equipped with NOVA Pro. The work covers 38 Tango trams and 25 TINA trams. It will proceed step by step. All communication between onboard and trackside train control systems will use the public mobile network. It will use 4G and 5G technology. The migration will take place within BLT’s existing infrastructure and system landscape.
Silvio Gemperli is Head of Business Unit Signalling Switzerland. He said the project builds on a long-standing collaboration. He said it extends the partnership for the next ten years and beyond.
He added that BLT is more than a customer to Stadler. He described it as a close strategic partner. He said the Waldenburg railway has demonstrated NOVA Pro’s potential.
He added that both sides are continuing to develop the network step by step. He said they are setting new standards in reliability, automation and innovation. He also said they are helping shape a more digitalised next generation of rail transport.
