Stadler will deliver four more Polaris-type rack-and-pinion trains to the Swiss company Gornergrat Bahn, which operates one of the most spectacular Alpine railway routes, between Zermatt and Gornergrat. The new multiple units will be delivered starting in the fall of 2028, and the order is valued at approximately 30 million Swiss francs (EUR 32.5 million).
The trains will run on the mountain line climbing from Zermatt to Gornergrat, a route known for its panoramic views of the Matterhorn, one of the most famous peaks in the Alps and one of the tourist symbols of Switzerland.
Four more Polaris trains for Gornergrat Bahn
The new order completes the fleet for this mountain line, where Stadler supplies trains specially adapted for operation on rack-and-pinion railways. This type of rolling stock is necessary on Alpine routes with steep gradients, where conventional traction is insufficient for safe operation.
With the purchase of these four additional units, Gornergrat Bahn is continuing its fleet modernization program for the route between Zermatt and Gornergrat, one of Switzerland’s most famous tourist lines.
An iconic tourist route in the Swiss Alps
The Gornergrat line is promoted in particular for its spectacular setting in the Alpine landscape and its unobstructed view of the Matterhorn. For this very reason, the investment has an image component as well as an operational one: the operator is counting on new trains for one of the rail routes that consistently attract tourists to the Zermatt region.
In such cases, the rolling stock serves not only to ensure capacity and reliability, but also to enhance the appeal of an already highly compelling tourist experience.
