A man died in the hospital from serious injuries after being hit by an SUV on New Bern Avenue in Raleigh early Tuesday morning, according to police.
Raleigh Police officers responded to a pedestrian crash around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday on New Bern Avenue near King William Road.
Police said 57-year-old Alonzo Hinton had life-threatening injuries when they arrived on the scene.
Antonio Dickens, 44, the driver of the SUV that hit the man was not hurt and is cooperating with police. Police said Dickens struck Hinton as he crossed a section of New Bern Avenue.
While officers investigated the incident, they found signs of impairment from Dickens. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation
Dickens was arrested and charged with driving while impaired.

At least 10 Raleigh Police units were on the scene with police tape blocking off about a quarter mile of New Bern Avenue between King William Road and Donald Ross Drive.
Officers were investigating a black SUV with damage to the front bumper and a shattered windshield. Officers were also speaking with people near another SUV down the road.
