The Nesquehoning Historical Society announced “Carbon County’s Lost Village of Lausanne,” the second event in a series of Local History Presentations as part of Carbon County and Nesquehoning’s America250 Celebration.
Local historian and author Vince Hydro will present the program at 6 p.m. Monday, April 27, and 2 p.m. Saturday, May 2, at Nesquehoning Historical Society Museum, 157 W. Railroad St., Nesquehoning.
This event is open to the public free of charge, although donations to the historical society are always welcome.
Before the founding of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company and the constructionof the Lehigh Navigation, the Village of Lausanne was settled at the mouth of the Nesquehoning Creek. The village was the origination point of the earliest ark shipments down the Lehigh River and was originally intended to be the site ofcompany headquarters.
Hydro’s presentation will also include a short history of the Lehigh and Susquehanna Turnpike, as well as Lausanne’s famous Landing Tavern.
Following the visual presentation, Hydro will be signing copies of his book “Outpost on the Lehigh River: The Lost Village of Lausanne.” Copies of his previous publications will also be available.
