“It is an honor and also nerve-wracking to perform the long-dreamed ‘Bolero’ with Béjart Ballet Lausanne in Korea. I will stay focused to the end and deliver a great performance.”
Kim Kimin, known as the “Star of the Mariinsky,” made the remarks at a press conference held at GS Arts Center in Seoul on Tuesday. The event was held ahead of the Korean tour (Oct. 23-26) of Swiss contemporary dance company Béjart Ballet Lausanne (BBL), with Artistic Director Julien Favreau and leading cast members in attendance.
BBL was founded by Maurice Béjart, an innovator of 20th-century contemporary ballet, and has gained international acclaim with signature works including “Bolero” and “The Firebird.” In this performance, Kim Kimin will take on the role of “Melody,” the central figure of “Bolero.”
Speaking about his preparation, Kim said, “I traveled to Lausanne three times for rehearsals, and once we started, I was so immersed that I did not drink water for three hours.” He added, “Time flew by, and the process was so enjoyable that laughter never stopped. Rehearsals were the happiest moments.”
Ravel’s “Bolero” is structured around the repetition of the same rhythm and melody, making even learning the choreography a challenge. Kim explained, “I memorized the entire orchestral score and then connected each instrument to each movement to remember the choreography.”
He also emphasized his own style in expression. “My mother watched the rehearsal and said, ‘The director is sexy, why can’t you do it like that?'” he said with a laugh, before adding, “I actually realized that the more you relax and simplify the movements, the more erotic they appear. Every movement has a secret key.” He continued, “BBL dancers have their own philosophy and tell their own stories. As the protagonist, I will paint the final stroke beautifully.”
