The Fitzpatrick brothers feared backlash from their father before Matt and Alex took home the trophy at the Zurich Classic.

Matt was coming off an incredible playoff win at the RBC Heritage, and he and his brother finished the tournament at TPC Louisiana 31-under, claiming a one-stroke victory. Alex, Matt’s younger brother, earned a PGA Tour card with the win and a chance at the Tour’s signature events.

Alex sank the final putt after Matt hit a clutch shot out of a green-side bunker on 18, placing it just inches from the hole and leaving his brother with a gimme putt. Speaking after the winning moment, the duo revealed that their father was probably not happy when they made a double bogey on 12 and a bogey on 14 during their hunt for the win.

“I was literally thinking after we made double, I’m like, Oh my God, my dad is going to be, like fuming, but also, like so nervous and freaking out at the same time,” said Matt.

“I mean, going down 15 I don’t know if I saw him, but he was down at the right side of the ropes. He was kind of saying to me… I looked across, and he was like, Come on, keep going, keep going.

“That was really nice. That was a really nice moment for me personally. It was like, Yeah, Come on, mate, let’s keep going here.

“Today I didn’t expect to be as nervous as I was. Like going to bed last night, totally fine. I was like we’re both playing well, four shots clear. We had a great day on Friday. We were really comfortable with what we were doing.”

Alex secured a two-year status on the Tour with the win alongside his brother, and crouched to the ground after he sank the 12-inch putt for the win.

“I couldn’t feel my hands. I couldn’t feel my legs. I couldn’t feel anything,” Alex Fitzpatrick said. “It’s a pretty life-changing thing.”

The English duo entered the final round with a four-shot advantage after setting a new tournament scoring record on Saturday, but were forced to withstand a tense finish after struggling to find their best rhythm down the stretch.

“Amazing to have them win together. It’s been brilliant,” mother Sue Fitzpatrick said as she walked from a post-tournament concert toward the clubhouse. “What a great finish.”

Alex Fitzpatrick couldn’t contain his excitement for the next two years as he will compete alongside his brother on the PGA Tour.

“Matt put his arm around me after he just stiffed it to a foot on the last,” said Alex.

“I was crouching there. Part of my head was going, Oh, my God, we’re going to win, and the other half was going, I need to stay focused, I could still miss this.”
