Sandvik has secured an order from Glencore to supply three DR413i rotary blasthole drill rigs for the reopening of the Bajo de la Alumbrera copper mine in Argentina, as reported by Mining Technology. The order was finalized in the first quarter of 2026.
The first DR413i drill rig is scheduled to arrive in Argentina in April, with the remaining two units expected in the fourth quarter of 2026. The mine’s operations are planned to resume in 2027, with copper production beginning in 2028. During its initial four-year phase, the mine is projected to produce approximately 73,000 tonnes of copper, along with gold and molybdenum, until June 2031.
In addition to the new rigs, Sandvik will provide rebuild services for three D75KS rotary blasthole drill rigs and three DP1500 crawler-based surface drill rigs, as well as labor and parts for overall fleet maintenance.
The DR413i is a high-capacity, crawler-mounted drill rig designed for surface mining, including large open-pit copper operations. It drills hole diameters ranging from 251mm to 349mm with a single-pass depth of up to 17 meters. The rig features the Sandvik Intelligent Control System Architecture, onboard diagnostics, and automation tools such as iDrill, which provide real-time feedback and improve drilling accuracy while reducing operator involvement.
The restart of the Alumbrera mine is considered strategically important for maintaining infrastructure, preserving workforce capability, and lowering future development risks. It also aligns with Glencore’s goals to increase copper production to meet growing demand from the global energy transition.
