In honor of the 90th anniversary of the first publication of the Green Book in 1936, by Victor Green, the Historical Dryborough Association and African American Heritage and Culture Center are proud to present Oasis Spaces, the Green Book Traveling Exhibit on loan from the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission. “The Negro Motorist Green Book,” published between 1936 and 1966, was both a travel guide and a tool of resistance designed to confront the realities of racial discrimination in the United States and beyond.

The book listed 327 North Carolina businesses—from restaurants and hotels to tourist homes, nightclubs and beauty salons in the three decades that it was published. Right here in New Bern, three “Oasis Spaces” were listed in the Green Book from 1938–1967 places your community built and sustained. The H.C. Sparrow Tourist Home, the Palm Garden, and the Rhone Hotel. Come see this history up close, it is the story of your state and your city. The exhibit is free and open to the public all are welcome – The Negro Motorist Green Book – 90th Anniversary Celebration first published in 1936 by Victor H. Green
