A resident was transported to the hospital after escaping from a fire that broke out and sent flames from the rear of a house near Lake Zurich early Sunday morning, fire officials said.

The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 4:31 a.m. Sunday to the 23500 block of North Garden Lane in unincorporated Lake Zurich for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and found flames showing from the backside of a house, according to Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department Chief David Pilgard.

The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level for additional fire departments to respond.

Crews pulled hose lines and quickly had water on the fire, bringing it under control promptly, Pilgard said.

One resident was home at the time and had escaped the residence prior to the fire department’s arrival.

Firefighters ensured no one else was still inside the residence — a single-family ranch-style house with a walkout basement.

Pilgard said the resident was transported to a local hospital by ambulance for treatment and evaluation.

The house is located in an area that does not have fire hydrants and crews had to haul water to the scene.

No firefighters were injured and no pets were involved. Approximately a dozen fire departments assisted, Pilgard said.

The fire was mostly contained to the bathroom but smoke damage was present throughout the home, resulting in it being uninhabitable.

Pilgard said the fire appears to have started in a bathroom and the cause remains under investigation.

The Salvation Army of McHenry County assisted at the scene by providing refreshments to first responders.

Pilgard said residents should ensure they have working smoke detectors throughout their house so they get notified in the event of a fire.
