The New Bern varsity softball team celebrated Senior Night in style Thursday evening, with a solid 7-2 conference victory over the visiting South Central Falcons at home.

The Bears (New Bern) jumped on the Falcons early in the middle innings, plating three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth, and two more in the sixth to pull away for the win. South Central managed just two runs in the sixth inning but couldn’t mount a full comeback.

Offensive Highlights

New Bern collected eight hits and took advantage of two South Central errors while stranding only three runners. Freshman Ella Byrd led the charge, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Fellow freshman Koda Kirksey also went 2-for-3, driving in a run with a double and swiping two bases.

Avery Banks — 1-for-2, RBI, run

Ellie Poston — 1-for-3 with a triple

South Central was limited to just four hits. Madison Zobre (Sr.) went 2-for-4 with a run, while Aurora Edwards (Fr.) added a hit and an RBI. The Falcons left 12 runners on base and struck out 10 times.

Pitching and Defense

New Bern Senior Pitcher Anna Champey held South Central in check most of the night, allowing only two runs on four hits while recording 10 strikeouts. The Bears committed just one error in the field. South Central used two pitchers and surrendered seven runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five.
