The ETH Zurich Institute for Theoretical Studies (ETH-ITS) proudly announces that Junior Fellow Anna Skorobogatova has been awarded the prestigious Maryam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize, part of the 2026 Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics. The award was presented on April 18, 2026, in Los Angeles, recognizing her outstanding contributions to geometric measure theory.

Anna’s work addresses fundamental questions at the intersection of analysis and geometry, a field concerned with understanding shapes, surfaces, and their properties using analytical techniques. In a series of influential papers with collaborators, she resolved a long-standing problem regarding the structure of singularities in area-minimizing surfaces. This achievement completes a research program that has challenged mathematicians for over sixty years.

We are delighted to see Anna’s work recognized at the highest international level. Her achievement reflects exceptional individual talent and the collaborative spirit we strive to foster at the ETH-ITS.

The Maryam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize is awarded annually to early-career women mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to their fields. It is named in honor of the late Fields Medalist Maryam Mirzakhani, celebrating her legacy of groundbreaking research and inspiration. The 2026 Breakthrough Prize Ceremony premiered on Breakthrough’s official external page YouTube channel on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at 3:00 PM Eastern Time (12:00 PM Pacific Time).

ETH-ITS congratulates Anna on this remarkable achievement and looks forward to her continued contributions to mathematics and the broader scientific community.
