It was a mass exodus out of the Amazon. “I heard there was a fire on the third floor and then it spread to the fourth floor,” said Melanie Lovell, an Amazon employee. Firefighters from Berks and Schuylkill counties responded to a fire at the Amazon warehouse in Upper Bern Township Friday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched around 9 a.m. to the warehouse in the 3500 block of Mountain Road for a reported structure fire.

All employees were later sent home.

“As far as I know there was a pipe burst going on. They basically told us to sit outside for a while and leave early,” said employee Griffin Betts.

“I got here as everyone was evacuating the building,” Lovell said. “I heard there was smoke and sprinklers so everyone was just rushed out.”

Employee say a similar incident occurred Thursday.

“Yesterday, same thing happened. Sprinklers, smoke and we were all evacuated. It seemed like everything was okay though, so we were put back in the building. Just a little bit of a smell. Nothing too bad.”

Amazon provided a statement, thanking first responders and saying they’re working with investigators to determine a cause and keep employees informed as to when operations will resume. The Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate.
