Two European rivals meet with a spot in the semifinals on the line, as Finland and Switzerland face off in the final women’s hockey quarterfinal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

These two teams met in the group stage back on Tuesday. While Finland came away with a 3-1 victory, the pace of play was heavily leaning toward the Finns, as they looked far and away better than the Swiss.

That ended up being Finland’s lone win in the opening round. In fact, the victory marked the first time Suomi had scored in Milan, as they were shut out in their first two games against the United States and Czechia. Yet, even after losing to Canada on Thursday, the Finns have a good chance of making it back to the semifinals.

Finland has made it to the final four in six of the first seven women’s Olympic tournaments, having won a record four bronze medals.

Switzerland might have finished at the bottom of Group A, but contrary to previous performances at the IIHF Women’s World Championships, the team actually won a game. That came last Friday, when the Swiss upended Czechia in a shootout.

Yet, Switzerland will have to pull off an upset if they want to play in the Olympic semifinals for the third time in the nation’s history.
