Albertsons Cos. didn’t meet the threshold to secure insurance coverage for more than 100 lawsuits alleging the grocery chain stoked the opioid epidemic, a Delaware state court ruled, handing the latest loss to corporate policyholders looking for liability insurers to foot the bill for “public nuisance” litigation.

The underlying lawsuits against Albertsons didn’t seek damages “because of bodily injury” and therefore aren’t covered under policies issued by units of American International Group Inc., Chubb Ltd., and other insurers, the Delaware Superior Court said in a ruling unsealed Wednesday.
