ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Ontario County recently announced a suspected case of hantavirus. The Geneva City School District confirmed it involves a student.
The district sent a letter to families saying that the county’s department of health is investigating the case. Health experts and the district are stressing that there is no evidence of risk to other students or staff. The investigation was announced this week by the Ontario County Department of Health.
Health officials in Ontario County have said that the disease is spread through contact with infected rodents or exposure when infected urine, feces, or saliva becomes airborne. Hantavirus found in the US was not spread from person to person.
The County Department of Health says the suspected case is not connected to the hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship.
The district is urging families to rely on information from the district and public health officials. They are working with the Ontario County Department of Health and will provide further updates when available.
