Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has entered a new partnership with Metafuels, a Swiss-based company focused on sustainable aviation fuel technology, according to a statement from the airline. The collaboration aims to advance the development and market introduction of viable sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) solutions.

Partnership Goals and Context

Under the agreement, SWISS and its parent group Lufthansa Group are working with Metafuels to promote the scaling-up of SAF production. The partnership is designed to help SWISS secure long-term access to synthetic fuels and support lower-emission aviation, while also investing in Switzerland as an innovation hub. The airline and the Lufthansa Group are also evaluating long-term commitments to SAF procurement contracts, partly due to anticipated synthetic fuel additive quotas scheduled for adoption in Switzerland and the European Union from 2030 onward.

Metafuels’ Technology

Metafuels has developed a process that efficiently converts green methanol into sustainable aviation fuel. The technology offers flexibility in raw materials—using either biomethanol or e-methanol—and is described as scalable. The resulting SAF can be used with existing infrastructure and aircraft fleets. The company’s proprietary aerobrew process transforms sustainable methanol, produced from renewable energy, water, and carbon dioxide, into aviation fuel.

Current and Planned Facilities

Metafuels is currently establishing a demonstration SAF production plant at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland. In parallel, the company is developing its first commercial SAF production facility in Rotterdam.

Statements from Executives

Jens Fehlinger, CEO of SWISS, stated that future availability of sustainable fuels at sufficient scale will only be possible through investments in technologies and partnerships today. He said the airline is actively contributing to making synthetic fuels market-ready and scalable, and that partnering with a Swiss company sends a strong signal. He added that achieving goals will require industrial-scale production, and that sustainable fuels must become available faster, at affordable prices, and in significantly larger quantities.

Saurabh Kapoor, CEO of Metafuels, described the agreement with SWISS and the Lufthansa Group as a milestone and an affirmation of the role synthetic SAF will play in aviation’s future. He noted that securing SWISS, Switzerland’s national airline, as the first aviation-sector partner is particularly significant. Kapoor emphasized shared objectives of paving a viable and scalable path to lower-emission air travel, and that both rising demand and tighter regulations will increase the importance of synthetic fuels, with Switzerland playing a key role.

Broader Industry Context

The scaling-up of synthetic aviation fuel production is still in early stages. Current and planned production capacities are unlikely to fully meet today’s decarbonization goals. The partnership is part of a broader Lufthansa Group initiative to support SAF development through research partnerships, pilot projects, industry alliances, and customer-oriented offers. SWISS continues efforts to minimize carbon dioxide emissions from its flight operations, including investing in fuel-efficient aircraft and using sustainable aviation fuel as a primary lever for emission reductions.
