Chinese Companies to Reach Record Offshore Revenue by 2030, Driven by Tech Competitiveness: UBS - News and Statistics

Chinese enterprises are poised to speed up their push into international markets, fueled by growing technological strength, with the automotive and energy sectors leading the charge, according to UBS. The Swiss lender forecasts that overseas revenue contributions could hit an unprecedented peak within half a decade.

By 2030, non-financial companies listed on the mainland are expected to generate 25% of their income from foreign markets, climbing from 18.7% in the prior year and representing the highest share since 2003, UBS estimated.

Robin Xu, who leads China research at UBS Securities, observed that the current wave of global expansion is evolving from government-directed initiatives to profit-seeking efforts driven by companies themselves, as domestic rivalry stays fierce. Speaking at a briefing on Tuesday, Xu highlighted that China’s substantial investments in research and development have already strengthened its edge over international competitors, a trend evident in technology hardware exports this year.

Anticipating that R&D outlays will continue to narrow the technological gap, Xu predicted further growth in exports to emerging economies, including those involved in the Belt and Road Initiative. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that China’s R&D spending as a share of gross domestic product hit 2.8% last year, surpassing the OECD average for the first time. In 2024, businesses accounted for 77.7% of total R&D expenditure.
