Samson, Ala. (WDNews) — According to social media posts shared by local residents and animal rescue advocates, a small Maltese-like breed dog is receiving emergency veterinary care after allegedly suffering severe abuse in Geneva County.
Posts circulating online claim the small dog was beaten so badly that both eyes were forced from their sockets. The animal was reportedly taken to a veterinarian by a neighbor, who also contacted law enforcement.
According to a public statement from Barbara Weber Seaman with FUR, or Felines Under Rescue, the dog underwent emergency treatment and both eyes were reportedly placed back in position by Geneva Animal Vet Clinic.
Seaman told WDNews that she later spoke with the veterinarian, who reportedly confirmed the dog, identified as Toby, is now expected to be blind in both eyes due to the injuries.
Seaman also said a foster home has been found for Toby and that the foster family will be traveling from Virginia.
Additional social media posts identified the alleged owner and stated Samson Police Department has been contacted regarding the case. Officials have not publicly released any details about any charges or arrests connected to the investigation.
Samson Police Chief Jacob Godwin confirmed to WDNews that an investigation is active but said he could not release additional details at this time.
“We’re still under investigation,” Chief Godwin said. “We are getting close to getting done with it.”
Chief Godwin also expressed his eagerness to have the case resolved.
The posts have sparked strong reactions online, with many calling for stricter animal cruelty laws and justice for the injured dog.
FUR is currently accepting donations to help cover veterinary expenses related to the dog’s treatment.
