A new bench at the Barns of Rose Hill in Berryville will be unveiled and dedicated to the late Geneva Jackson at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Jackson, a well-known Clarke County caterer and community benefactor, was 92 when she died Feb. 6.
Barns of Rose Hill is a nonprofit arts, entertainment and community center on Chalmers Court, beside the Berryville-Clarke County Government Center. It takes its name from two restored, early 20th-century dairy barns in which it is housed.
Known for her award-winning confections, Jackson supported countless nonprofit fundraisers through her baking and philanthropy. Her contributions benefited organizations throughout the region, including the Barns, where her donated desserts became a beloved tradition at fundraising events, according to Executive Director Martha Reynolds.
Over several decades, Jackson also supported numerous civic and nonprofit organizations across the Northern Shenandoah Valley through volunteer service, fundraising and community outreach.
Reflecting her lifelong commitment to service, Jackson once said, “Volunteering is like paying rent to live on this Earth,” Reynolds recalled.
The bench plaque reads, “Geneva Jackson. Proof that love and grace can be shared through flour, sugar and open arms. May all who sit here know and spread the peace she wished for others.”
Following the dedication, guests are invited to gather for a light reception and share their memories of Jackson and her life and legacy.
“Ms. Jackson touched so many lives through her generosity, volunteerism and compassion,” said Reynolds. “The Board of Directors (of the Barns) wanted to create a lasting tribute reflecting the warmth, kindness and sense of community she shared throughout her life.”
