HSBC’s Swiss private bank has been placed under formal investigation by French prosecutors over claims it helped former Lebanese central bank governor Riad Salameh misappropriate public funds.

The preliminary charges allow prosecutors to widen their inquiry before deciding whether to proceed to trial, the FT reported.
