SAN DIEGO, CA — Switzerland boss Murat Yakin said the Socceroos gave him just the friendly he had been expecting, speaking after the 1-1 draw in San Diego.

While the focus in Australia will be on the improvement in the side after the first hydration break, Yakin’s homework will be to unpack why his side’s performance went the other way.

Part of it was due to the Socceroos’ change in tempo, others, he explained, had to do with acclimatising to the speed of the pitch in the middle of the day.

But the World No.19’s coach pinpointed the threat of the likes of Nestory Irankunda and Mohamed Toure as what caught his eye at Snapdragon Stadium.

“How we play football, I like it, but we had some mistakes and in our build up and (we) lose the ball,” he reflected.

“It was not usually our game the last few minutes before the break.

“But they are good players, very fast players.

“We have to be careful, we saw in the team sequence. That’s why it was a good friendly game against a strong team.”

The Swiss qualified top of UEFA’s Group B ahead of Kosovo, Slovenia and Sweden and he says their goal against Qatar, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Canada is to top their group.

“Of course I have an experienced team, good quality players, and we have the target to be the first in this group.”

The Socceros celebrate their equaliser against Switzerland.

He continued: “This team, we want to always play the best game, we want to play the best World Cup for a Swiss team … that’s why we want to play for every game for victory.”

Playing Australia was part of his preparation; so too was the midday kickoff.

“The time to play, it’s a little bit different to prepare morning and night (for the) players.

“It was good to play, also at the same time, of course the quality of our game after 20 minutes lasted a bit.

“The dynamic of the game, 20 minutes was perfect, we had a lot of chance and this is what I can grow from my team. But we had many mistakes that wasn’t to accept in our game.”

That’s the exact moment Australia’s game swung in a different direction as well.

“Our game was very positive, but we didn’t finish our chances. And then after 20 minutes, 25 minutes, when you lose a little bit of control and mistakes, also the pitch was not so wet, how we like it, but this is normal.

“(Now we know) next week at this time will be the same.

“And that’s why I’m good to know how it works next week.

“It was a positive game with many chances but also at the end, no injuries and we can keep going on next week.”
