This was made clear in a statement read by Morocco’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Omar Zniber,on behalf of the group, which emphasized that the Sahara issue remains within the political framework sponsored by the United Nations under the supervision of the Security Council.
The statement emphasized that the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco constitutes a serious and realistic basis for reaching a lasting political solution to the conflict, while reaffirming support for the implementation of Security Council Resolution No. 2797, whose objective is to resume the political process with the participation of the parties concerned.
Furthermore, the countries supporting the initiative welcomed Morocco’s development of the autonomy proposal, as well as its commitment to integrate the inhabitants of the Tindouf camps and guarantee their rights on an equal footing with the rest of the citizens. At the same time, they commended Morocco’s cooperation with United Nations human rights mechanisms, noting that it reflects a positive commitment to the promotion and protection of rights and freedoms.
The statement noted that the opening of consulates general by several countries in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla reflects growing international support for Morocco and contributes to boosting development, investment, and regional cooperation in the southern provinces. The group concluded its statement by emphasizing that the resolution of the conflict will provide a boost to integration and development in the African and Arab regions.
