U.S. President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war with Iran, a U.S. official told Reuters.
The memo had been signed digitally on Sunday by Vice President JD Vance and Iran’s chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and witnessed by Trump, the official said.
The White House said Trump signed a memorandum of understanding on ending the war in Iran while at Versailles, though cameras weren’t present for that.
Trump himself told reporters that he has signed the memorandum. “It’s signed,” Trump said “I signed it in Versailles. Just signed it.”
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said both leaders had signed the agreement and endorsed him as a mediator.
He said in a post on X that the deal “shall enter into force with immediate effect and as a first step, Islamic Republic of Iran will instantly reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the United States of America will immediately lift the naval blockade.”
Sharif said Pakistan and co-mediator Qatar will still host an official signing ceremony on Friday in Switzerland.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said, however, that Friday’s talks are not confirmed for now.
“The Friday meeting was confirmed until a few hours ago, but when it was decided that the presidents of the two sides (Iran and the U.S.) would sign the agreement, it was decided to pause consideration of the Friday meeting for now,” Baghaei said.
Baghaei added that continued Israeli attacks on Lebanon would be considered a breach of the United States’ commitment to the Islamic Republic.
