Having captured the imagination of the fans with a 6-0 demolition job of Qatar for a first-ever win at a men’s FIFA World Cup, Canada will now look to make more history against Switzerland on Wednesday.

A win or draw against the Swiss will be good enough to clinch top spot in Group B, and also put Canada officially through to the knockout stages for the first time in its history. Only a most bizarre mathematical circumstance via a heavy defeat can condemn Canada to third place at this stage.

Switzerland came in as group favourites but a shock draw against Qatar in their opening match has opened the door for Canada to claim first place. Both teams are tied with four points and Canada holds the superior goal difference. That’s why a draw would be enough, but rest assured Jesse Marsch’s men will look to deliver another big statement with a win.

What’s at stake? Winning the group would mean Canada would remain in Vancouver for a Round of 32 match on July 2 while second place would send them to Los Angeles on short rest having to play on June 28.

Here’s how you can watch all the action unfold.

With Ismaël Koné having been tragically ruled out for the tournament with a fractured tibia, the main storyline will be around who replaces him in the starting XI.

Nathan Saliba came on for Koné against Qatar and almost immediately scored on a free kick. He is the most obvious replacement to occupy the centre of the pitch alongside captain Stephen Eustáquio.

All else should remain the same for a Canada team that just dismantled Qatar 6-0, though it will be interesting to see how Marsch manages the yellow cards Alistair Johnston, Derek Cornelius and Luc de Fougerolles have coming into this match. If any of these defenders receive a yellow card against Switzerland, they will be forced to miss the Round of 32 match.

Alphonso Davies is not expected to start, but with an additional week of recovery since the Qatar match where he was first ruled fit, could be in line for his first appearance of the tournament.

Previous starting XI: Maxime Crépeau, Alistair Johnston, Luc de Fougerolles, Derek Cornelius, Richie Laryea, Tajon Buchanan, Stephen Eustáquio, Ismaël Koné, Liam Millar, Tani Oluwaseyi, Jonathan David.

Switzerland will likely look to stick with the same team that put away Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1.

One point of debate may be who starts at forward alongside top target man Breel Embolo, as Dan Ndoye has flattered to deceive through the opening two matches.

Johan Manzambi, who came on for Ndoye against Bosnia, scored twice and looked very threatening in his time on the pitch. He could have had a hat trick, too, if not for captain Granit Xhaka insisting on taking a 97th minute penalty.

Previous starting XI: Gregor Kobel, Silvan Widmer, Nico Elvedi, Manuel Akanji, Ricardo Rodriguez, Michel Aebischer, Granit Xhaka ©, Remo Freuler, Fabian Rieder, Breel Embolo, Dan Ndoye.
