CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — A woman who was found shot in the torso Wednesday in her Canandaigua apartment is in critical condition, while the suspect in her shooting is in jail after leading police on a chase into the city of Geneva.

Canandaigua Police say they responded to a multi-family residence on Center Street at about 2:51 p.m. Wednesday, June 24 for the report of a shooting and found the 67-year-old woman shot. Canandaigua firefighters and emergency personnel treated her at the scene for life-threatening injuries, and then she was flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital. She remained in critical condition shortly after 9 p.m., according to Canandaigua Police.

Officers quickly learned of a suspect and vehicle that several witnesses saw leaving the scene, and they broadcast the description out to other law agencies. Soon after, an Ontario County sheriff’s deputy saw the vehicle on Routes 5 and 20 entering the Town og Geneva and tried to do a traffic stop. The vehicle drove off, and was pursued by the Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and the Geneva Police Department as the chase entered the City of Geneva. Eventually, the suspect hit a utility pole and parked vehicle on Milton Street, got out and ran off, caught after a short foot chase. Police said a loaded gun was found in the vehicle.

Spencer D. Wayne of Elmira was charged with attempted murder and assault. He was transported to the Ontario County Jail in Canandaigua.

Officers and deputies had part of Center Street near Beeman Street in Canandaigua blocked off. They were still blocked off shortly before 9 p.m., but Police Chief Mathew Nielsen expected them to be open soon.
