NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) – A rabid racoon has been found in New Bern.
The Craven County Health Department says the animal was discovered at the corner of Simmons Street and Elizabeth Avenue.
Anyone bitten or exposed to the raccoon’s saliva should contact your doctor or the health department for a rabies risk assessment.
Health experts say a common mistake pet owners make is using bare hands to check their pet for bites after an encounter with a raccoon or fox.
They say if your pet is bitten, leave the wound alone and take the pet to a veterinarian.
