According to a statement from the City of Bern, the Serena Foundation plans to build affordable senior housing in the new Viererfeld/Mittelfeld neighborhood. The building lot designated for this purpose will be acquired by the Burgergemeinde Bern. «The project, located in Mittelfeld, is to be developed in consultation with the adjacent Burgerspittel,» the statement says.

Serena is the majority shareholder of the nonprofit Concara Holding AG. The acquisition follows the decision by the Burgergemeinde of Bern not to proceed with its project on the M31 construction site. The Burgergemeinde had examined various concepts, including community gathering spaces for the neighborhood as well as «new and innovative forms of housing.» The plan was to create a close connection between the new building and the existing Burgerspittel. However, according to the city’s statement, it subsequently became clear that such a functional and operational connection could not be implemented under the current planning guidelines.
