Her 26-year-old son, who was a passenger in the Nissan, was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva and then airlifted to Stroger Hospital in Chicago with life-threatening injuries. The man, who lives in Essexville, Michigan, was in critical condition as of Sunday.

The woman’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family members, according to the news release.

He has since been charged with reckless homicide, aggravated driving under the influence in a crash causing death, aggravated use of a communication device causing death, aggravated driving under the influence in a crash causing great bodily harm and aggravated driving under the influence with no insurance, according to the release. He is also facing misdemeanor charges and petty offense charges in connection with the crash.

Mares did not have an attorney listed on the Kane County circuit court’s website as of Monday. He was taken to the Kane County jail at 5:17 a.m. on Sunday to await a court hearing, the Geneva Police Department said, and remained in custody at the Kane County jail as of Monday, Kane County detainee records show.

He was set to appear in court on Monday afternoon, Kane County circuit court records show.

A portion of South Randall Road from Kaneville/Keslinger to Fargo Boulevard was closed overnight after the crash while law enforcement was on the scene, the news release from the Geneva Police Department said, and the roadway was reopened Sunday at 3:10 a.m. The Geneva Emergency Management Agency and Kane County Office of Emergency Management provided traffic control assistance.

Geneva police, the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office and Kane County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the crash, according to the release.
