LAKE GENEVA, Wis. — Geneva Lake Police on Monday released the ages of the people who were on a boat that capsized on the lake during a severe storm last week.
Police said a 47-year-old man with “extensive boating experience” was operating the boat nine other people aboard Friday when it was hit by two large waves that caused the vessel to take on water and list. A third wave hit the boat, rolling it over and sending all 10 people into the water.
All children on board were wearing life jackets, however a 10-year-old girl, 7-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy became trapped in the sunken vessel.
Divers found the children inside the boat in 32 feet of water. They were freed and brought to the surface, where they were taken to local medical facilities. However, all three children died.
Other passengers who survived the capsizing included a 75-year-old man, a 73-year-old woman, a 49-year-old woman, a 46-year-old man, a 44-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy.
Police said the people on the boat were from Batavia, Ill.; Wheaton, Ill. and Fontana, Wis.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
