The Knights are a young team with only three seniors. There are a lot of freshmen on this year’s team and even a few eighth graders getting their first taste of varsity experience.

“The season’s been pretty good so far. We’ve really had solid pitching, really good defense. They’ve worked hard. They’re consistent with their routine. And we’re seeing some of the fruits pay off,” Geneva School baseball coach Bob Down said. “They’re a bunch of ninth graders, and we expect them to grow.”

One of the leaders on this year’s team is sophomore Will Thigpen. He is a three-sport athlete playing football and basketball as well, but baseball is where he sees his future.

“I’ve played baseball all my life. I just take it real slow and have peace of mind. I love pitching and I really want to develop as a pitcher,” Thigpen said.

“He’s going to get stronger. He’s only in 10th grade. We’ll see how he does and how he progresses. The big thing about Will is he’s a really, really good baseball player. But he’s just a great kid, rock-solid kid. And that’s what we love, that his leadership really helps the ninth graders. We’re really blessed to have him,” Down said.

He is in just his second year on varsity pitching and playing in the outfield. On the mound, he’s had a dominant season while hitting the cover off the ball at the plate.

“We’ve had a lot of older players leave and a lot of younger guys come up. I’ve been working really hard and have always been a leader in my life,” Thigpen said.

Thigpen wants to continue to be a two-way player on the diamond as he continues to lead a young Knights team this season.
