GENEVA, Ala. (WTVY) – Good Friday is a day of reflection for Christians—and in Geneva, that reflection turned into a community-wide show of faith.
Dozens of community members took to the streets for the town’s annual Good Friday Cross Walk, carrying a cross through the city as a symbol of remembrance, faith, and unity.
Step by step, participants made their way through Geneva, marking the day Christians believe Jesus Christ was crucified. The walk, which spans nearly five miles, serves as the culmination of Holy Week events and brings together people from all walks of life.
“This is Good Friday… it’s good for us if we’re followers of Christ. Not so good for Jesus—that’s the day he had to carry the cross,” said Pastor and Geneva Ministerial Association President James Red Coleman. “And so we do this in remembrance of what he did for us.”

Coleman says the event highlights the strength of the local faith community, with multiple denominations coming together for one purpose.
“It’s really a gathering of followers of Christ in our community… Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostal, non-denominational—we’ve got everybody here,” he said.
From church leaders to families to local officials, the event continues to draw support year after year.
Geneva Mayor David Hayes says the walk represents more than just tradition—it’s about unity.
“Any day we can come together and put differences aside for one cause—that’s special. That’s what today is about,” Hayes said.
For many, carrying the cross offers a deeper perspective on the meaning of the day.
“When you carry it, you start to realize… this is nothing compared to what Jesus went through. It’s an honor,” Hayes added.
Along the route, drivers honked in support, while others stopped to watch—and even join in.
The walk is a meaningful tradition for friends and families and helped shaped their faith over the years.
“It really shows what we stand for… seeing all these people come together—it’s amazing,” one family member said.
“It’s every parent’s dream to see your kids grow up in the Lord… it means everything,” another added.
Organizers say the goal goes beyond the walk itself, using the moment to share a message of faith and connection across the community.
“It gives us an opportunity to share the gospel… and bring people together,” Coleman said.
