Candice Bergen had quite the rebellious youth!<\/p>\n
The \u201cMurphy Brown\u201d star revealed on Ted Danson\u2019s \u201cWhere Everybody Knows Your Name\u201d<\/a> podcast that she accidently set fire to a restaurant in Switzerland while attending boarding school.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was the Olden in Gstaad in a ski resort where the school I was going to was set,\u201d she said. \u201cI had snuck out. Because I was only 14, I wasn\u2019t allowed to go out at night, so I\u2019d snuck out.\u201d<\/p>\n Olden wasn\u2019t \u201cjust any restaurant, it was the nicest restaurant,\u201d Bergen noted.<\/p>\n She snuck out along with some older schoolmates for a snack at Olden, as well as some wine, \u201cwhich you could do in Switzerland because there was no age restriction.\u201d<\/p>\n They opted for a snack of meat fondue, where pieces of meat are cooked in boiling oil or fat at the table. All was going well until Bergen got an idea.<\/p>\n \u201cI said, \u2018Oh, let\u2019s flavor the fat. Let\u2019s put some wine in the fat,\u2019\u201d she recalled. \u201cSo, I jauntily dumped my glass in the fat, and this flame went up onto the ceiling of the restaurant. And we were all evacuated, it was snowing outside.\u201d<\/p>\n Bergen did face some consequences for the incident. \u201cI was not allowed out for the rest of the year\u2014and quite rightly,\u201d the 80-year-old said.<\/p>\n Olden was restored and has been running ever since, but Bergen became somewhat infamous in town.<\/p>\n \u201cI went back to Staad with my second husband, Marshall Rose, we were walking in the village, and a very nice, older-looking ski instructor said, \u2018Excuse me, but aren\u2019t you Candice Bergen?\u2019 And I said, \u2018Yes, I am.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n She continued, \u201cAnd he said, \u2018Aren\u2019t you the woman who burned down the Olden?\u2019\u201d she continued. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Yes, I am.\u2019 So, my name had lived on.\u201d<\/p>\n Follow us on Instagram @WeArePauseRewind<\/a> for all your pop culture obsessions.<\/p>\n
