{"id":101954,"date":"2026-07-12T03:45:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T03:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/101954\/"},"modified":"2026-07-12T03:45:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T03:45:06","slug":"drc-locks-down-glencores-kamoto-offices-in-tax-clash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/101954\/","title":{"rendered":"DRC locks down Glencore\u2019s Kamoto offices in tax clash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.glencore.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Glencore<\/a>\u2019s (LON:GLEN) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glencore.cd\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">offices<\/a> in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been sealed off by local tax authorities, escalating an ongoing dispute in payments owed to the state, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bloomberg<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The tax agency, DGI, shut Glencore\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kamotocoppercompany.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Kamoto Copper<\/a> offices, sources say, though the closure has not yet impacted production at the company\u2019s nearby mines and processing facilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>DGI says Glencore owes billions of dollars to the state and the raid follows unsuccessful talks between the two parties. Glencore is disputing the claims made by DGI and notes that it will continue to work with the relevant authorities to settle the matter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The DRC is the second-largest global producer of <a href=\"https:\/\/mining.com.au\/plenty-in-the-ground-not-enough-supply-coppers-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">copper<\/a> and the top producer of cobalt, with the Kamoto complex being one of the largest producers of both metals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Glencore holds a 70% stake in Kamoto, which posted 2025 production rates of 190,000 tonnes, with a goal to reach an eventual annual output of 300,000 tonnes. The government of the DRC owns the remaining 30%.<\/p>\n<p>As previously <a href=\"https:\/\/mining.com.au\/funding-friday-glencore-secures-billion-dollar-deal-with-orion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported<\/a>, in February 2026, Glencore and the <a href=\"https:\/\/orionrp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Orion<\/a> Critical Mineral Consortium entered a non-binding memorandum of understanding for Orion to acquire a 40% stake in Glencore\u2019s assets in the DRC, including Kamoto Copper and <a href=\"http:\/\/mutandamining.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Mutanda Mining<\/a>.
