The assist was Messi’s record-extending 10th of his World Cup career.

Mac Allister had missed another header from a corner a minute earlier, and also had a shot blocked in the 9th minute as he was involved a lot in the opening stages of the match. Those were the only three shots the Argentines managed in the entire first half.

Switzerland remained in the game after that point, preventing Argentina from scoring for the rest of the half, but didn’t create much themselves either.

Djibril Sow’s shot from outside the box was the only attempt the Swiss got on target to test Emi Martinez in the first half, and they struggled to get into Argentina’s penalty area with much regularity. Martinez came out of his net in the 31st minute to make sure he was first to a pass behind his backline, preventing what would have been one of the best chances to score of the opening 45 minutes.

Martinez made huge stops on Dan Ndoye and Granit Xhaka in the 65th and 66th minutes as Switzerland started ramping up the pressure, before Ndoye got the Swiss on the board in the 67th minute with a brilliant finish around the Argentina keeper from a tight angle.

Breel Embolo was sent off with about 20 minutes to go, after a VAR check for an alleged foul on him was overturned and revealed that he had dived. The ensuing yellow card for simulation was his second yellow of the match, and Embolo was distraught as his teammates guided him off the pitch.

The winning team will move on to play England in the semifinals in Atlanta next Wednesday. Jude Bellingham powered the Three Lions into their second semifinal in the last three World Cups with his two-goal performance.

Switzerland would accomplish their best-ever World Cup finish with a win, while Messi and Argentina are looking to become just the third repeat champions at the World Cup. Brazil did it most recently in 1958 and 1962, while Italy won the second and third World Cups in 1934 and 1938.

For the second time on Saturday, we’re heading to extra time in the World Cup quarterfinals.
