{"id":102774,"date":"2026-07-13T14:26:19","date_gmt":"2026-07-13T14:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/102774\/"},"modified":"2026-07-13T14:26:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-13T14:26:19","slug":"uk-strikes-landmark-swiss-trade-deal-as-it-rebuilds-ties-with-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/102774\/","title":{"rendered":"UK strikes landmark Swiss trade deal as it rebuilds ties with Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swiss flag is pictured at the Harbor in Geneva, Switzerland, March 13, 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Denis Balibouse | Reuters<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. and Switzerland announced a services free trade agreement on Monday, in a deal that is expected to lend a multi-billion-dollar boost to British exports and ease travel between the two nations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It marks the sixth trade deal struck by the U.K. in two years and comes as the governing Labour Party seeks closer ties with Europe as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/19\/uk-eu-summit-why-fish-and-youth-mobility-are-the-big-stumbling-blocks.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">post-Brexit reset<\/a>.\u00a0While Switzerland is not a European Union member, it is deeply integrated into the European single market via a network of bilateral treaties.<\/p>\n<p>The British government estimates the free trade agreement to eventually unlock \u00a35.2 billion ($6.96 billion) a year in additional exports to Switzerland over the coming years. <\/p>\n<p>A separate agreement will also allow those travelling between the two nations to use e-gates to speed up airport waiting times, while scrapping data roaming charges for visitors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the U.K. government described the deal as the &#8220;most significant trade agreement for services&#8221; ever concluded by the country. Both economies are heavily dependent on the services industry, which contributes 81% of UK GDP and 83% of employment, per government figures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/108333991-17839483571783948353-47135896352-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"UK Trade Minister: Our destiny is to be back in the EU\"\/><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Britain&#8217;s &#8220;historic destiny&#8221; to rejoin the EU <\/p>\n<p>U.K. minister for trade policy Chris Bryant told CNBC in an exclusive interview on Monday that it marks the best deal the country has made on services so far.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are lots of areas where we&#8217;re very similar, of course, whether it&#8217;s in financial services, provision of insurance, or life sciences and pharmaceuticals,&#8221; he told CNBC&#8217;s Ritika Gupta.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bryant also said the government wants trade with the European Union to be as frictionless as possible, adding that he believes that the country&#8217;s &#8220;historic destiny&#8221; is to rejoin the bloc.<\/p>\n<p>U.K. trade minister Peter Kyle added: &#8220;This is the most significant services trade deal the UK has ever negotiated.
