The collaboration will focus on connected lab systems designed to support flexible and reliable laboratory workflows.

The healthcare sector relies heavily on diagnostic testing [1], with about 70% of treatment decisions based on test results. Laboratories are also facing workforce shortages as fewer professionals enter lab roles. Aging populations and the shift toward personalized medicine are increasing demand for faster testing and more efficient lab operations.

The collaboration with Roche will focus on automation solutions for processes such as sample preparation and intra-logistics. These systems are intended to help laboratories improve diagnostic workflows and support patient care.

The first applications will focus on two laboratory areas. In Roche’s pathology business segment, ABB Robotics will develop solutions for slide handling and organization to support digital and connected workflows.

In central diagnostics labs, Roche’s largest laboratory testing segment, ABB Robotics will use autonomous mobile manipulators to move samples and materials between instruments. The goal is to improve connectivity, flexibility and consistency in lab processing. These applications could help clinical diagnostics labs manage repetitive tasks and allow staff to focus on higher-priority work.

ABB Robotics will be responsible for developing lab automation solutions using its automation expertise, manufacturing presence and robotics portfolio, supported by ABB Robotics software.

Roche will contribute diagnostics expertise and application knowledge to help ensure the solutions address laboratory needs in clinical settings.

The collaboration with Roche is part of ABB Robotics’ strategy to work with partners across the laboratory ecosystem to address workflow bottlenecks. ABB Robotics is also applying physical AI, where robots use real-world data to adapt to changing environments, to support flexible lab automation, improve efficiency and assist laboratory decision-making.

[1] U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), FDA and CMS Statement: Americans Deserve Accurate and Reliable Diagnostic Tests, January 18, 2024.

For more information, visit abb.com.

Tagged With: ABB Robotics

ABB Robotics announced a global collaboration with Roche Diagnostics to develop and commercialize robotic solutions for clinical laboratories.…

[130
232,4050
post-104582","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-abb","tag-abb","tag-abb-robotics
["GET
