NEW BERN, N.C. (WITN) – More than a month after Dana Ammons went missing, her family says they\u2019re still searching for answers \u2014 and now they\u2019re asking the public to help keep the search active by spreading the word.<\/p>\n
After spending hours searching wooded areas over the weekend, Ammons\u2019 family shifted their focus Sunday to the New Bern community, posting and handing out missing person flyers to businesses and residents. They say they were surprised to learn many people in the area didn\u2019t even know Ammons was missing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen my husband and I came back last weekend, not many people knew,\u201d said Katelyn Lane, a member of Ammons\u2019 family. \u201cSo we\u2019re hoping to be able to have more foot traction, visit more areas.\u201d<\/p>\n
Family members say the goal is simple: get Ammons\u2019 face in front of as many people as possible in hopes someone recognizes her or remembers something that could generate a new lead.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe more her face gets out, then the more everybody knows about it,\u201d said Felicia Elmore, also part of Ammons\u2019 family. \u201cThe more that face is examined, they\u2019ll remember it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Volunteers joined the effort, describing the search as a community responsibility.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you\u2019re part of community, you\u2019re part of family, and this is your family member,\u201d said volunteer Mary Donald.<\/p>\n
The family says they\u2019re especially concerned because Ammons was last seen without her phone or other belongings. Lane says that\u2019s out of character.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis isn\u2019t like her at all,\u201d Lane said. \u201cIf she was medicated, she would never choose to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Family members say they\u2019ll continue distributing flyers and following up on leads until Ammons is found, urging anyone with information to contact police.<\/p>\n
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Havelock Police Department.<\/p>\n
If you believe you see Dana Ammons, her family asks that you do not approach her. Call 911 or the Havelock Police Department immediately.<\/p>\n
