SUMRALL \u2014 A retired Mississippi Highway Patrol master sergeant who spent nearly three decades serving the state needs financial support as he undergoes cancer treatment<\/a> in Switzerland after conventional therapies left him with severe complications.<\/p>\n

Thomas Little, of Sumrall, was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer in August 2023. According to a fundraiser created on his behalf, Little is receiving treatment at the Alpstein Clinic in Gais, Switzerland after doctors determined he could not tolerate standard chemotherapy because of a rare genetic marker.<\/p>\n

The fundraiser says Little spent 28\u00bd years with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, including 10 years as a road trooper, more than 18 years with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations and 14\u00bd years on the agency\u2019s SWAT team. After retiring in 2022, he became director of works for the Town of Sumrall.<\/p>\n

According to the fundraiser, Little initially underwent radiation and chemotherapy after his diagnosis but experienced severe complications, including organ damage, neuropathy and significant weight loss. The fundraiser states that additional testing later revealed a genetic condition that prevented his body from properly metabolizing chemotherapy.<\/p>\n

It also says his cancer later returned and spread to his liver, and that U.S. physicians determined his tumors could not be surgically removed. After consulting with specialists, Little traveled to Switzerland on June 25 to begin an intensive four-week treatment program that supporters say focuses on targeted cancer therapies, immune system support and other biological treatments.<\/p>\n

The fundraiser states that all treatment expenses, along with travel, lodging and related costs, must be paid out of pocket and that multiple return trips are expected.<\/p>\n
