An overgrown stretch of trail in the Trinity Alps Wilderness turned a routine multiday backpacking trip into a sprawling search operation last weekend, and it ended with all eight hikers walking out on their own two feet.<\/p>\n

The group, six adults and two children, was trekking between Lion Lake and Goldfield Campground when they lost the path. Fires that burned through the area several years ago left sections of the route choked with brush, making the trail nearly impossible to follow. The hikers were expected to reach the Goldfield trailhead Thursday evening but never arrived.<\/p>\n

One member of the group had walked ahead and lost the trail himself before eventually finding his way to the trailhead where the group\u2019s vehicles were parked. When the others failed to show that night, he called his wife the next morning and headed back into the wilderness to look for them.<\/p>\n

The Trinity County Sheriff\u2019s Office learned the group was overdue on Friday, July 24. Deputies and Trinity County Search and Rescue crews began combing roughly 22 square miles of rugged backcountry, entering from the Boulder Lake trailhead and traveling toward Goldfield Campground while other crews checked nearby trailheads and logging roads. The California Highway Patrol sent a fixed-wing aircraft to assist from above.<\/p>\n

Around 4:30 p.m., a Search and Rescue member spotted the missing hikers walking out at the Goldfield trailhead. All eight were uninjured, though thirsty and exhausted.
