Switzerland advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3\u20130 shutout of Italy on Tuesday at Rho Arena. Leonardo Genoni turned aside all 20 shots he faced, while Nico Hischier recorded a goal and two assists to lead the Swiss offense. Philipp Kurashev and Roman Josi also scored in the win. Italy finished the tournament without a victory and has not won a game at an Olympics since 1988. Switzerland will face Finland in Wednesday\u2019s quarterfinal matchup.<\/p>\n

Switzerland Builds Control<\/p>\n

Philipp Kurashev opened the scoring early in the first period when he collected the rebound of Nico Hischier\u2019s shot and struck from the right circle, slipping the puck past Damian Clara at 18:41 to give Switzerland a 1\u20130 lead. At 9:35, Roman Josi made it 2\u20130 off a pass from Sven Andrighetto, converting on the power play from just outside the left circle. Hischier also picked up an assist on the second Swiss goal.<\/p>\n

Hischier increased Switzerland\u2019s lead to 3\u20130 when Damien Riat received the puck from Timo Meier before handing it off to Hischier, who ripped a one-timer from in close that sailed over Clara\u2019s blocker at 14:07 of the second period.<\/p>\n

This was Leonardo Genoni\u2019s second shutout in three starts at these Olympics. In three games, he has allowed just three goals. He became only the second Swiss goaltender to post multiple shutouts at an Olympics featuring NHL players, joining Jonas Hiller (2014).<\/p>\n

Timo Meier collected a pair of assists. Meier recorded his team-leading fifth point of the 2026 Olympics, one shy of the Swiss single-tournament record during Olympics with NHL participation (Jean-Jacques Aeschlimann: six in 2002).<\/p>\n

Nico Hischier posted 0-2\u20142 in the opening period, tying the Swiss record for assists in a period at an Olympics featuring NHL players (also Mathias Seger on Feb. 20, 2010). Only one player from any country has recorded more in a single frame: Patrick Marleau (0-3\u20143 in P2 on Feb. 14, 2014). Hischier (1-2\u20143) scored his first goal of the tournament and tied Roman Wick (1-2\u20143 on Feb. 20, 2010) for the most points in a game by a Swiss player at an Olympics with NHL participation.<\/p>\n

Roman Josi scored to give Switzerland a 2\u20130 lead and improved to 2-2\u20144 (four games played), tied for the most points among defensemen in the tournament. One of the players he matched is teammate J.J. Moser, who already holds the Swiss defenseman record for most points at an Olympics featuring NHL players.<\/p>\n

Damian Clara made a total of 48 saves for Italy.<\/p>\n

Switzerland will face Team Finland in the quarterfinals, marking only the second Olympic meeting between the countries with NHL players. Their only prior matchup also came in Italy \u2014 a 5\u20130 Finland win in the 2006 round robin.<\/p>\n

Switzerland has reached the quarterfinals at an Olympics featuring NHL players for the third time \u2014 previously in 2010 (lost to Team USA, eventual silver medalist) and 2006 (faced Team Sweden, eventual gold medalist).<\/p>\n

This marks the second all-time Olympic meeting between Italy and Switzerland with NHL involvement. The only other matchup came in the 2006 round robin (3\u20133 tie).<\/p>\n
