As the summer crowds begin to ease, late August and September are the perfect time to explore Devon\u2019s coast, with quieter beaches, milder temperatures and scenic walks waiting to be discovered. A charming seaside town<\/a> tucked between steep hills and the Bristol Channel has been named Devon\u2019s best seaside town by Which?, putting it firmly on the radar for a picturesque West Country getaway.<\/a><\/p>\n

Lynmouth is the kind of place that looks almost too perfect to be real, with its pretty riverside setting,<\/a> dramatic coastline and traditional village charm. Sitting on the edge of Exmoor<\/a> National Park, it is surrounded by spectacular scenery and is often described as \u2018Little Switzerland\u2019.<\/p>\n

The area is a dream destination for walkers, <\/a>with the South West Coast Path and Tarka Trail passing through the village and offering plenty of routes to explore. Visitors can follow the River Lyn upstream to Watersmeet, a dramatic wooded gorge managed by the National Trust with riverside trails and a tea garden.<\/p>\n

One of Lynmouth\u2019s biggest attractions is the famous Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway, which has connected the twin villages since 1890. The 260-metre railway is the highest and steepest water-powered railway in the world, with passengers treated to sweeping views of the coastline as they travel between the two.<\/p>\n

For a change of scenery, Ilfracombe<\/a> is less than 20 miles away, well known for its range of restaurants and historic harbour. Visitors can also spot Damien Hirst\u2019s striking \u2018Verity\u2019 statue standing at the harbour entrance before heading back to the peaceful surroundings of Lynmouth.<\/p>\n

For even more dramatic scenery, holidaymakers can make the 1.5-mile journey to the Valley of Rocks, where towering cliffs and unusual rock formations create one of Exmoor\u2019s most spectacular landscapes. The area is also home to intrepid goats and some of the highest sea cliffs in Britain, making it a memorable spot for a coastal walk.<\/p>\n

For larger groups looking to visit the area, Summerville<\/a> is a traditional stone cottage that sleeps up to six. Also overlooking the East Lyn River, this cottage offers a delightful retreat with gorgeous gardens that is perfect for families.<\/p>\n

If a big group celebration is on the cards, the area is also home to Lynhurst,<\/a> a large, distinguished property just a short walk from the historic village of Lynton. Set within beautiful gardens and natural woodland, it features a games room with a slate pool table and dart board, plus an outdoor table tennis table for plenty of entertainment.<\/p>\n

With no shortage of cost and quirky accommodation in the area, travellers on a budget might enjoy a quiet stay at Dogsworthy, a pair of adults-only, private shepherd’s huts<\/a> located on the edge of Lynton and Lynmouth within the Exmoor National Park on North Devon’s coast.<\/p>\n

Guests who have already enjoyed a stay at River View <\/a>have left glowing reviews online. One visitor said: “Lovely apartment. Perfectly situated with everything we needed. A real ‘home from home’. We love Lynmouth and will be back.”<\/p>\n

Another added: “A wonderful location for walkers as several spectacular river and coastal walks from the door. Great for visitors with dogs, close to the promenade for walks and meeting lots of other dogs.”<\/p>\n

A more detailed review explained: “A small but well-equipped and comfortable flat with beautiful views over the river to the sea. Good location to explore the area. Luckily found a temporary parking spot initially on Riverside Road in order to unpack, as the flat entrance is on a pedestrianised street.<\/p>\n

“Parking permit was \u00a325 for the week at the nearby Upper Lyndale car park. Tesco<\/a> delivered groceries without difficulty. Walks locally and some National Trust properties made it a very enjoyable week in a lovely location.”<\/p>\n

One guest noted, however, that ‘the 2 flights of steep stairs would need to be taken into consideration by anybody perhaps not a 100% fit’, but another enjoyed the views, saying: “We had the door open all the time and could listen to the water and the wildlife, which we really enjoyed.”<\/p>\n
